Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Purpose and uses of a Chimney Flue
A chimney flue basically is a duct in the chimney used to pass on exhaust from the fire place through the chimney outwards. A chimney may have several flues running through it depending on how many fire places are in a particular house. There are different sizes and styles of chimney flues you may choose from. For safety purposes it is advisable that regular maintenance is carried out on the flue.

The main purpose of having a chimney flue is that it acts as an escape that ensures the products of the fire are released out and does not flow back in to the house. It ensures smoke and the gases produced are exhausted with minimal heat loss. Chimney flues are expected to be straight thus providing the best draft for materials out of the chimney.

When gases pass through the flue, the bricks on the wall of the chimney will cause heat resistance and radiate the heat downwards back into the house thus minimizing heat loss from the house. The flow also ensures that items from outside like acid from rain or snow do not penetrate the chimney walls causing any corrosion to the kidney walls over time. The flue also allows air to pass through the chimney providing oxygen for efficient combustion.

The chimney flue is the chamber through which hot gases, smoke, or other byproducts of the combustion are vented. Chimney is upright structure, which surrounds flue and gives heat insulation for reducing risk of fire as well as possible for single chimney for having the multiple flues, and as can be a case when home has many stoves and fireplaces that are linked to same chimney. The flues come in various sizes and styles, and they need regular maintenance & inspection for the safety. Purpose of the flue is to give vent so that byproducts of the combustion don't back up in the room. Ideally, this carries away smoke and gases with very minimal heat loss, and so fire gives warmth without even endangering people indoors. The flues are generally straight, since this gives best draft, making sure that there is the steady flow of any unwanted material out from the chimney.

Amount of draft is controlled with use of the damper mounted inside, and allowing user to strike right balance between the ventilation and the heat loss. The flues are generally made from the heat resistant materials, as gases are very hot. Surrounding chimney adds extra fire resistance, and decreases heat loss, as bricks in chimney heat when flue gases go through, radiating heat outwards in the building. Tile, ceramic & brick are some common construction options for the chimney flues, even though it is possible to use different metals. As it's difficult to get fire to burn out with efficiency, with time, flue can get clogged with creosote or other byproducts of the incomplete combustion. Besides reducing available draft or making flue less efficient, the products pose fire hazard.
