Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

What is creosote?
Creosote has been well known for its preservative properties. It usually comes after the distillation process when tar floats on water. Creosote is common in the blast furnaces and fireplaces, within the chimney flues; you can easily notice this substance especially in case where the wood is not burning completely. Creosote is the same compound that is normally used in the preservation of meat during the process of smoking. On the industrial level, there are normally two types of creosote and they include the wood and coal tar creosote. Apart from being used as a preservative, creosote can as well be used for medicinal purposes, antiseptic or simply a laxative. These compounds are produced on a large scale and usually for the extraction of various chemical substances.

What causes creosote?
Whenever wood is burnt, chances are that some pollutants will be produced in form of gases and this usually depends on the kind of stove that has been used and also the manner in which the home owner will operate the whole thing. Creosote is a common occurrence in the pipes of the stoves as well as chimneys. It usually has a gummy and corrosive smell and if no precautions are taken, it might end up making a coat on all the areas within the chimney.

How creosote is formed
Normally when the volatile gases that come during the burning process combine, they usually are exposed to cooler temperatures and will lead to the condensation process especially when they are coming out of the chimney. The gases usually leave in a smoke form and it is then cooled to a temperature of 250 degrees Celsius which enables them to liquefy and later condense in a solid form. Creosote has the capacity to take all forms. When still in the liquid form, it can run down the pipes, and this will be easily noticed when it comes out through the pipes. At times, it can also form a fluffy substance which usually breaks and falls. In most cases creosote is the leading cause of chimney fires and this explains why it has to clean regularly.

How creosote builds up
The manner in which it builds is a bit tricky and you may not notice at first. Normally when the building process starts, the flow within the chimney is usually impaired and this means the smoke takes longer to come out. The only thing is to remove the pipes and have them cleaned before it turns out into a serious hazard.

Preventing creosote
The easiest way is to invest in chimney brushes with some flexible handles that will give you the condition to clean the chimney liberally from the top to the bottom. The cleaning and inspection process has to be done on an annual basis, since it is corrosive; the best way is to remove it as fast as you notice since it can end up costing you a fortune if left for a longtime. The wet season makes it worse as it makes the creosote to smell bad around your room.
