Clean out door or access door is one of the important feature of the chimney. If you still don't have clean out door, you should consider having it. It is because of the fact access door will facilitate the removal of the mess produced in the combustion chamber. Most of the people underestimate the function of the access door and you should not!! It is little bit tricky to install access door by yourself. Don't worry!! In this article, you will learn an easiest way to install the access door for cleaning up the mess. Here comes the step by step instruction.

1. Prepare yourself

This work needs you to drill through the masonry and will need you to clean up the mess produced during the process. Hence, you will need a gloves, googles and a glass to protect yourself from the mess.

2. Assess the firebox

Every chimney is different and hence you should measure the distance between the firebox and the ash dump door and position the access door at the bottom of the chimney. Trace the exact perimeter around the access door that is needed to be placed with the pencil.

3. Time to drill

It is the time to drill holes through the masonry at the depth of a half inch in each of the corner of the access door. Be very careful while drilling, it is better to call a professional, if you think that drilling is not your cup of cake.

4. Make way for the access door

It is the time to remove masonry up to the thickness of the access door to make way for it. You can remove the masonry by the hard chisel and the harmer. Remove the residual debris from the time to time. It is messy and not good for health. Be careful with it.

5. Use diagonal brace as support to place the door

Prepare a diagonal brace made up of wooden lumber to support the access door, until the mortar has not dried. You may keep them away for a while.

6. Prepare mortar

Preparing a perfect mortar is the most crucial step of this process. Prepare mortar in the following standardized way. One part of class I or class II Portland cement should be mixed with the two parts of lime and three parts of sand along with the sufficient quantity of water. The mortar should be mixed thoroughly using the trowel so that there is a uniform distribution of cement.

7. Apply mortar

Apply mortar to the thickness of one-fourth of an inch. Apply mortar to the bottom edge and side of the door and make sure to open the door wile applying the mortar. Remove any residual mortar using a pointing trowel. Don't forget to place necessary braces to support the door.

8. Wait for a day

Wait for a day so that mortar will be dried. After mortar has been dried, remove the messy debris by using line brush or wet scrub brush.
