Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to replace a damper handle or the entire damper assembly
Fireplace damper is the most crucial part of the chimney and its main function is to maintain the temperature inside the chimney and prevent debris and birds from falling into the chimney. Chimney damper is closed, when the chimney is not in use. It is important to have a perfect damper to isolate the chimney from the outer environment. It is directly responsible for increasing the fuel efficiency of your chimney. As the cost of energy goes higher day by day, it is necessary to keep eye on the damper assembly unit.

When you should consider replacing your entire chimney damper assembly or your damper handle?
Damper handle is used to ease the opening and closing of the damper assembly. There are lot of things that could go wrong with the damper handle and the damper assembly. Let's discuss some of them in brief. As your damper assembly is subject to the constant treatment of heat, smoke and the flames, it is common to get affected over time. Common effects of the above process are cracks, voids and crumbling. Damper assembly is also vulnerable to rusting. Damper handle may not allow sufficient movement of damper assembly and in that case it may be required to replace your damper handle.

Replacing damper handle:
Things you need before getting started
  • New chimney damper handle
  • Torch light or drop light
  • Wrench
  • Thick rubber Gloves
1. Purchasing new damper handle
It is better to purchase a new damper handle with same specification as the old. If in doubt, take the old model along with you to the store. Taking the picture of the damper assembly is also suggested, if you are not good with the technical details of the damper assembly.
2. Insert new damper handle.
Before doing this be sure to wear thick rubber gloves. Damper handle do come in very shapes and size and hence it is difficult to write a generalized instruction but don't worry, take my words, just follow the instruction in the manual provided to you while you purchase a new damper handle.
