Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Replace firebox refractories (or panels)
Firebox panels is one of the essential part of your chimney and it protects you from the extreme temperature produced in your chimney and hence it should withstand extreme temperature and should satisfy industrial standard required for fire safety. For those who don't know what firebox is, here is the simple definition. It is the place where all the combustion takes place in the chimney and hence it is called as the heart of your chimney. It should be corrosion resistant and should not have cracks or voids in its surface. Constantly look out for the sign of any damage in your panel. If you found any crack, void or corrosion, you should consider replacing your firebox panel. You can do it yourself by following these instructions.

Things you need before getting started
  • Gloves
  • Qualified Replacement panel
  • Wrench
  • Hammer
  • Circular saw
  • Masonry blade
  • Hard chisel
  • Measuring tape
  • Placeholder
1. Prepare yourself
Before proceeding further, make sure that you wear thick rubber gloves and has brought a quality replacement material. Refer the specification of the material before buying it and make sure that it satisfies fire safety standard of your region.

2. Detach everything from the firebox
Detach everything that is attached to your firebox. Be careful to not break or damage any one of those materials while doing so.

3. Remove the bad panels
After finding the bad panel or panels, remove them from the firebox. They will be usually detached by few bolts and hence it is not difficult to remove them. The rule of thumb is to remove the side panels before removing the rear one. Slide in panels are easy to replace than mortared one. If your panel is attached to mortar, use chisel and hammer to replace them. You need to remove all the panel, if even only one panel is bad. Measure them using a measuring tape. Cross verify the measurement by repeating the above step. Note the measurement.

4. Prepare your new panel
This part needs little bit of skill of do. If you have not does any type of chimney works before, it is time to call the professional or you may give it a try before calling the professional. Your task in this step is to cut exactly with the same dimension of your old panel. You may need a circular saw and a masonry blade to do a perfect cut.

5. Inserting new panels
Insert new panels into the firebox, starting from the panel at the rear end followed by side panels and finally front panels. Make sure that every panel is attached intact to the firebox. Reinserting mortared panel is time consuming and should be done by inserting the mortar in the front and rear surface of the panel after placing them into the place by placeholder.

6. Attach everything back to the firebox
In the second step, I had told you to detach all the materials attached to the firebox. Now, it's the time to place them back in their original position. Make sure to place everything in the appropriate position.
