Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to replace a chimney damper?
Chimney damper encloses your flue, while the chimney is not in use. Technically, chimney damper need to be tight and intact and should isolate your fireplace from the external environment. Strictly speaking, efficiency of the chimney is decided by the efficiency of the chimney damper. It also prevents animals, rain water and other debris from getting into your fireplace.

What could go wrong with your chimney dampers?
Chimney Dampers are constantly in contact with heat, smoke and flames and hence this deadly combination eventually starts to ruin the chimney damper. They may eventually produce cracks in the chimney damper. Apart from this, Chimney damper is also vulnerable to rusting. Effects of poor chimney damper may result in poor energy efficiency of chimney and will no longer prevent the animals from being fallen into your home.

When to replace your chimney damper?
"When do I have to replace my chimney damper" is the most common question asked by many people out there. The answer to this question is you have to replace your damper, when you notice considerable loss in heat or cold air entering your room from the fireplace while the chimney is not in use. Replacing chimney damper is not tricky and it can be done by anyone. Doing it yourself can save you some bucks. Just follow the step by step instructions given below.

Things you need before getting started
  • New chimney damper
  • Torch light or drop light
  • Wrench
  • Thick rubber Gloves and googles
1. Before doing anything, safety should be given priority. Wear thick rubber gloves and googles that will protect you from minute debris. Completely sweep your fireplace and get your fireplace rid of all debris by wire brush or by wet scrub brush.

2. Find the location of chimney damper in your fireplace. Fireplaces are darker and hence you need either a torch light or a drop light. Chimney damper is usually located a foot higher than that of the fireplace.

3. After locating the chimney damper, remove the damper by wrench. Damper is usually fixed to a rod with 4 bolts. You should remove the damper from the rod by wrench. Assess the condition of the chimney damper to find out what went wrong. Look for the sign of cracks, rusting and stains in the chimney damper. If you can find a sign, you can confirm that the damper needs to be replaced.

4. Place the replacement damper in the place of old damper. Always make sure to measure the damper size. If you are not sure about the sizeif you are not technically strong with measurement or math, it is highly suggested to visit the store with old damper. Once you got a perfect replacement, fix the new damper and tighten it by those 4 bolts.

5. Test yourself to make sure that new damper works well. It is highly suggested to test damper, once you replaced it. If everything went well, Congrats and have fun. If you face the same problem again, consider consulting an expert because there are many things that would have gone wrong.
