Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to repair a chimney cap that blew off
Chimney cap encloses all the underlying material of the chimney such as chimney crown and chimney flue. Chimney cap is the crucial thing that prevents animals, leaves and rain from being fallen into your chimney. Chimney cap is usually made up of stainless steel or copper and they are made to withstand rusting, corrosion and moisture. It is actually rare to notice cracks, crumbling and void in your Chimney cap, as they are made up of stainless steel. However, there is a strong foe for your chimney cap and it is the wind. Stronger winds would blew the chimney cap. Fortunately, you can repair the chimney cap, if the damage incurred to the chimney cap is low and fixable. Some people really don't care about the chimney cap. For those people, here is my small piece of advice. Chimney cap not only protects your home from invading objects but also helps in achieving proper draft for the chimney. Let me tell you the procedure to fix a chimney cap in step by step manner.

1. Assess the condition of the chimney cap

Before trying to repair a chimney cap, the condition of the chimney cap needs to be assessed. Look for the signs of cracks, voids and crumbling. If you observe any of the above signs, it is better to change the chimney with a new one that should match the specification of the old one. If the chimney cap has incurred a minimal damage, then the chimney cap can be fixed. Else, it is better to replace the chimney cap. By minimal damage, I mean the bent, loosened chimney cap and minor crack or void. Remember even a small crack will have a great impact on the airflow of your chimney.

2. Make the chimney cap intact

Chimney cap may have been slightly bent or loosened. You have to restore it to the normal form. Chimney cap can be bent back to normal form by the use of hammer but be careful to not cause any more damage. Chimney cap should be attached intact to the chimney flue by the use of strong adhesive or screws as per the type of your chimney cap. If in doubt, refer the user manual of your chimney cap.

3. Clean debris surrounding the chimney cap

Clean the debris such as mortar that is present around the chimney cap by the use of cold chisel and hammer. While removing the debris, make sure that you don't leave any mark or scratch on the chimney cap.

4. Fix cracks and final touch

Minor cracks can be filled by caulking and if cracks are left untreated, water may leak into your chimney. You may need to clean the debris of the fillings and mortar by the use of cold chisel and hammer. Remember to wear googles and thick rubber gloves while cleaning the debris.

5. Test your chimney cap

After fixing the chimney cap, test chimney cap to ensure that chimney cap is working perfectly and check whether it is preventing water and debris from being fallen into the home. Repeat the above steps, if you found any defect in the working of chimney cap.
