Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Stop smoke from entering your home through your chimney
Smoke problems are one of the common problems faced by almost everyone who is using the chimney. This article is a simple guide for you guys. In this article, you can learn everything that you should do to prevent the entry of smoke into your home. After all, it is a home not the firebox. Before teaching you to DIY, I should confess that you need to learn some technical stuff but don't worry it is a simple chimney physics. I hope you will love it.

Chimney physics
How a fire is produced? In order to ignite a material, you need three things and they are heat, oxygen or oxidizing agent and fuel. Combustion will be complete, if all the above things are available in the ample quantity. This is called fire triangle. In an enclosed rom, oxygen is always deficient. So you should make a way for the oxygen to enter your chimney. Oxygen is absorbed to your room by the use of draft. Draft is the pressure difference between the inner gas and outer gas of your chimney. This pressure difference is usually stronger and hence it is responsible for absorbing the oxygen and for expelling the exhaust gas along with smoke. If your chimney is drafting properly, you would not have any smoke problem.

Finding the real culprit:
Almost all of the smoking problem is attributed to the insufficient drafting. Ideally draft should be more than 20 Pascal. Finding the real reason behind the improper drafting is tricky but take it as a challenge. Hence, use trial and error to find the real culprit. Never be hesitant to try different methods explained in this article. Make sure that your chimney flue's cross sectional area is at least one-tenth of the cross sectional area of the firebox. Simplest way to solve the smoke problem is to extend the chimney flue line by few meters. If even it won't works, try to increase the combustible material. It increases the heat and thus it increases the pressure of inner air. Hence draft is also increased. Try to use a hybrid dried wood with less moisture, as it is known to produce less smoke.

Check every material in your chimney
Cracks, voids and crumbling in the material may dissipate the valuable heat and hence you should make sure that every material from chimney flue to cap is free from any defect. If you found any defect, either fix or replace it based on the level of damage. Unclean materials are not good for the proper draft and hence clean everything at least once every 6 months.

Keep an eye on your surroundings
Is everything in your chimney perfect? Still you can't get rid of your smoke problem? Probably, keep an eye on your environment surrounding your chimney. Chimney works perfect in a cold and non-windy climate. Stronger winds can blow your chimney caps frequently. Hence insulation is needed in windy areas. In hot climate, thermal insulation is needed over the chimney cap. You should take a special care to not allow an exterior climate to have a major impact on the inner air.
