Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Installing and/or resurfacing a chimney crown
The chimney crown is often not considered as an important part of the chimney. This is constructed to prevent entrance of rainy water and other natural elements. Well, it is important for you to have a chimney crown of the chimney because if it will rain in cold days, you will face problems in keeping your fireplace dry and in working condition. The chimney crown is situated at the edge of chimney to remove smoke. If you will avoid having chimney crown that means you are allowing water to flow down towards the fireplace or wood stove.

For sure, it will not allow you to have cozy heat inside your home because wet fireplace will be totally useless. So prefer to have a chimney crown of the chimney to prevent rainy water's flow inside the fireplace. If the crown is already built above the chimney, but it is deteriorated, then you should think about resurfacing the chimney crown. It is not a very expensive task, but it is useful to maintain dryness inside the fireplace. The installing process is given below.

Remove old mortar:
In case you are resurfacing a chimney crown, you should first remove old mortar. It is not possible that you will construct a new crown on old one. Take a brick chisel and a hammer and then remove whole mortar to construct a new chimney.

Create a frame:
Once the mortar is removed, now you have to create a frame of wooden boards for chimney crown. This process can take less time, but try to prepare 2x4 board's frame for providing a good support to the chimney. Once the frame is ready, you have to set it above the chimney bricks and then fix this frame to have firm structure for the crown. For reinforce settlement of the frame you should use load binder. After setting the frame on chimney bricks and applying load binder, check there is any space left or not. If there is any space, then seal it using the duct tape.

Prepare expansion joint:
The expansion joint is an important part of the chimney and it should be prepared using ridged cardboard. To prepare expansion joint, simply place ridged cardboards around the chimney pipe and fix it using duct tapes. It is a necessary part of the chimney crown because it prevents cracks in concrete, while you use the fireplace and heated smoke comes up.

Create brick structure:
This is the ending part of preparing a chimney crown. For this, first you should prepare concrete using sand and cement. Before you place bricks to form a crown above the chimney, pour the bricks into the water and then set a layer of concrete and then place bricks above it. Leave a few inches difference between the edges to have impressive edges around the crown.

Thus, the crown preparation will get completed and now you can cover the crown with a metal cap to prevent water fall inside the chimney. This process is quite simple, but you should always take support of professionals to build the chimney crown. They know how to complete this task in an impressive and effective way.
