Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to replace a chimney crown and when it is needed
Chimney crown or chimney wash is one of the essential part of the chimney as it covers the chimney and acts like an umbrella of a chimney. It is used to protect the underlying mortar from the extreme weather conditions such as heavy snow and rain. Underlying mortar is usually weaker and hence it should be protected by a chimney crown which is usually made up of metal or concrete wall.

When you have to consider replacing your chimney crown?
If you have poorly designed chimney crown, you may consider replacing it. Very old chimney caps were not constructed on par with the standards. If you found that your flue is leaking, you need to inspect each and every part of your chimney to find the real culprit but believe me, for most of the time, chimney crown will be the culprit. If you find any larger cracks in the crown, consider replacing it immediately. Some amateur masons simply apply mortar to your chimney crown but that won't last longer. Mortar are not weather and water resistant and hence, it won't even last in a place with unpredictable weather condition. Instead of hiring such people to replace your chimney crown. You may consider doing it yourself. It is not that much tricky. Let's discuss step by step instruction on how to replace a chimney crown.

1. Prepare yourself
Safety should always be given priority. Get yourself a pair of thick rubber gloves, googles and mask to save yourself from the dirty debris.

2. Removing debris around the chimney crown
Ideal chimney crown should be made up of reinforced concrete and hence before replacing chimney crown, remove the mortar debris by using cold chisel and wire brush.

3. Building and placing chimney crown
A 2*4 wooden board is attached with 1*6 wooden board to form an ideal layout around the chimney crown and they are attached using screws and nails. Clamp the above layout tightly to the chimney crown and there should not be any visible voids between them. If there are any visible cracks, fill them before proceeding. Ignoring to fill the void may result in the formation of more destructive crack.

4. Attach a cardboard to the flue
A cardboard should be attached to the flue and the purpose of doing so is to prevent form to be attached firmly to the concrete. To ease the release of form from the concrete structure, oil should be added. If you want to remove the form without breaking it, you should add oil between the form and the concrete.

5. Prepare and add your concrete mix
Preparing concrete is tricky and forms final part of our procedure. For a high tensile strength, consider buying class I Portland cement. The ratio of cement, sand and gravel in the composition of the concrete should be 1:2:3. Water is the crucial part in the composition and they should not be more than 60% than the volume of cement and too much less water also contributes to weak structure.

You can combine the mixture in a wheel barrow or a mixer. After preparing the mixture, apply them to the form and remove the debris using chisel. Wait for a day and then remove the form.
