Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to replace ash dump doors on your chimney?
Ash dump door is used to facilitate the removal of the ash produced in the firebox from combusting organic matter. Ash dump door is a small door usually made up of cast iron. As it is subjected to the extreme heat, it should be made up of metal with a fairly high melting point and should be corrosion resistant. It is necessary to clean the ash dump accumulated below the ash dump door regularly as too much accumulated ash and soot is hazardous. Even though you buy a quality ash dump door, it deteriorates over time. So it is mandatory to replace an old door to be safety code compliant. You need to assess the condition of the door, before making a decision. In order to access the ash dump door, make sure to clean materials in the firebox and look for any possible sign of corrosion, rusting, crumbling metal and cracks. If you have found any deficiency in the dump door that cannot be fixed, then you should consider replacing it. It is very easy to replace ash dump door. You can do it yourself by following the step by step instruction given below.

1. Prepare the firebox
Before proceeding further, protect yourself by wearing thick gloves, googles and mask as you will be dealing with lot of nasty mess. Clean all the debris with a wire brush or with a wet scrub. Detach everything that is attached to the firebox and this is done to prevent any possible damage that could be caused while replacing the ash dump door. Take a photograph of your firebox, before detaching the things attached to them as this will help in placing everything back to the correct position.

2. Locate the ash dump door
Ash dump door is relatively smaller in size and you should carry a torch light or drop light to find it. It is usually in the middle of the firebox. As soon as found it, assess its condition to confirm the signs of any possible damage. If you found valid evidence regarding its damage, proceed further. It is usually attached to the firebox by two bolts. Remove them from the firebox by the use of a wrench.

3. Measure the size of ash dump door
Measure the size of ash dump door and note the dimensions down on paper. If you are not comfortable at making the measurements, take the door to a hardware or home improvement store. They will help you out in finding the appropriate replacement door for your ash dump.

4. Insert the new ash dump door
Insert the new ash door on the appropriate place. Fix it to the correct position by the use of wrench and ensure that it is attached intact to the chimney. Attach all the things that were detached in the first step. Make sure to place everything back into exact position in which they were used to be in by comparing with the photograph taken in the first step.
