Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

If you have a very expensive fire place, replacing the fire box on your own is the last thing you should be doing, because it is a job, meant to be done by a professional mason. But, in case you have a smaller fire place, which is relatively simpler, then replacing the fire box is quite a cake walk.

Whether you choose to do it on your own or through someone experienced professional, the very first thing you must check is the fabrication of the firebox. If it turns out to be fabricated, it is always necessary for you to adhere to the manufacturer's pre-designated panels for replacement of fireboxes. Also note down the dimensions of the fire box before proceeding for this work.

However, do not be in a hurry to replace the firebox just after looking at it from outside, instead test the firebox to see if it is indeed time to replace the firebox. The following are the indicators you should look for, to verify the functionality of the fire box:

• Try to find out any cracks that might be there on the firebox. Cracks are the ultimate indicators that the firebox requires to be replaced.

• Use a trowel to rub across different parts of the mortar in the firebox, to check if it crumbles. If it does actually crumble, then the firebox requires to be replaced.

Follow these steps to safely replace the old firebox with a new one:

1)Masonry cement preparation: Follow the instructions that come with the cement package, and mix the appropriate combinations of sand, cement and other ingredients.

2)Cleaning up the old stuff: Remove the mortar in the fire box using a hand rake and throw away this material. Mortar that is stuck to the bricks has to be loosened with the help of a crowbar and then released using the trowel. In fact, if the mortar is very stubbornly attached, it might also be a good idea to remove it with hard blows from a hammer.

Once the mortar is removed, do not remove all bricks at once. First, take out the bricks at one section and replace it with the new set, one by one. Then, gradually move on to other sections and completely replace all the old bricks with new ones, also sealing them together, using fresh mortar.

3) Combustible clearance: Ask some professional masons, if this clearance of half an inch is required for your type of firebox or not.

4) Manufacturer's specs: The bottom panel of your firebox can be checked for manufacturer's specifications. Remove it from the panel and keep it with you for reference.

5) Select the new model: order the new model according to the old model's specifications.

6) Restore panels: The old panels need to be restored with the new model, in case it is pre-fabricated.

7) Brick pattern drawing: Use a trowel to draw the required patterns on the bricks. Apply cement with the refractories, on the panels, to give appropriate outlines.
