Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

The size of fire place and the chimney dimensions are absolutely important when it comes to the safety and efficiency of fire place. In fact, efficiency is reduced as you use a bigger fire place, though it may look very radiant and grand. The reason for this is that the amount of warm air that is actually taken from the room is more in case of larger fire places.

Chimney sizes may be of two systems, depending upon the type of chimney: metal or masonry. Metal chimneys have round cross sections, expressed in the form of diameters. While masonry chimneys have rectangular cross-sections, expressed in the form of length and breadth.

So, important rules for proper chimney and fire place sizes are as follows:

1)9:1/10:1 rule: The area of the fire place inlet should not be more than nine to ten times the smallest area of cross-section in the chimney. This rule may not be very strict for large chimneys, but it has to be adhered to, in smaller chimneys.

For example, a round chimney with minimum cross sectional diameter of 8 inches, cannot be mapped to a fireplace with an area more than 2.2-2.5 Sq.ft.

In general, this rule means that for every small volume of cold air that enters into the fireplace at a particular speed, the same volume flows through the chimney at nine times this speed. But, the net result is balanced, as the same volume is able to flow in and out. But, if the rule is not followed, say the ratio is 12:1, then a quarter of the volume of air that flows into the fire place remains in the chimney and mixes with the next batch of air that comes in. So the final air that is released also has some smoke mixed with it.

2) The Minimum area that can be allowed for an open fire is that of an 8" diameter circle. Be it rectangular cross section or round cross-section, the area cannot be below this legal minimum, for safe operation of the chimney.

3) Sometimes when we use hoods to cover the fire place, the actual area might appear smaller than it is. This leads to the accidental violation of the 9:1 rule. This effect, where there is a mismatch in the sizes due to the use of hoods, is called TARDIS effect. The TARDIS effect is based on a term called hood error.

Hood error is defined as the difference between the actual size of the fireplace and the expanded size due to the presence of hoods.

4) In case we need to make the fireplace of larger size, say 12:1 ratio, then we need to use larger chimney tiles and optimize other factors like the height of the chimney, the venting of the chimney and location of the smoke shelf.

5) The stove of the flue collar must have the same area as the chimney's smallest cross section. However the flue might have a greater size also, for example, An 8" stove must be matched with an 8" chimney or greater size.
