Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

You might be having all that you require, to clean up your smoke shelf, but all the shopping effort comes down to nothing if you are not prepared to remove the damper plate, which is a small metallic plate that is installed in the fireplace to keep the chimney closed. The purpose of keeping the chimney closed is to trap the internal heat in the form of conditioned air and also keep the cold air from coming inside your house.

However, the damper plate is supposed to be removed from time to time, either for cleaning the damper plate itself, or to clean the smoke shelf. But you might come across a situation where you may not understand how to remove the damper plate in the first look. In fact, few damper plates are actually not removable as the smoke shelf is designed in such a way. So, the very first thing you need to look for, is the provision that has been given, to remove the damper plate.

The most common provision for damper plates is the group of four bolts that are tightened along the four corners of the plate. You need to release the bolts using a ratchet or a wrench, by turning them in the counter-clockwise direction. Now, the important thing is to release the plate from the rod that holds it in position. This is done by moving the plate sideways gradually releasing it from the rod.

In case you find cotter pins, instead of bolts, and they are welded into the material of the damper plate, then your damper plate is not removable. Do not waste your time trying to find a way to break into the smoke shelf and fireplace from the bottom. It is much better, if you use the top-down approach, which involves cleaning the shelf from the top, as much as you can reach. Do not get frustrated that you are not able to reach deep down into the fireplace from the top. The fireplaces with non-removable dampers are designed to be cleaned from the top using special brushes. These are the kind of brushes that are commonly available in the market, for this purpose:

1) Round wire brushes with extensions: these brushes are available in various sizes(6",8"etc.),measure the size required for your fireplace and purchase.

2) Small stiff Polymer brushes: This kind of brushes can be used from the bottom, even if the damper plate is not removable. This is possible by slowly pushing the brush into the gaps in the damper plate. However, this has to be done by a professional as it requires some skill to push the brush through the damper plate.

3) Pull-cord chimney brush: This brush has a cord attached at both sides of the brush. The brush is dropped from the top by a person standing on the top side of the fire place. The cleaning is done by pulling this brush to all sides of the fireplace, through the cords at both ends.

4)Rope brush: This brush has a rope pulley arrangement for moving the brush to different heights of the fireplace.
