Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

All about chimney dampers
Chimney dampers are energy saving devices that allow for the closure of the chimney flue, especially when you are not using the fire place. The traditional dampers are installed right at the trunk or throat of the fireplace. They are also referred to as Chimney cap dampers and they are available as customized and replacements. The Chimney dampers will help you close and lock the fireplace and ensure that heated or cooled air does not escape. The use of Chimney dampers has helped homes save hundreds of dollars in energy cost, and they also help in protecting the environment. Proper installation of dampers can ensure the prevention of energy leakages and reduce the time to heat or cool the home. Poorly performing Chimney dampers can cost you more money on heating.

How to install Chimney dampers at home
There are quite a number of steps to take in the installation of Chimney dampers and they include the following;
  • Make sure you buy the right damper,
  • Add some silicone at the tip of the Chimney flue
  • Place the damper on the chimney flue,
  • Set the mounting bracket properly on the fire box,
  • Drive in the anchor nails needed for the mounting brackets,
  • Set the Adjustment Clamp properly,
  • Complete the Chimney damper installation.
Buy the right damper and add some silicone at the top of the Chimney flue
The ideal chimney damper must come with a 30inch wire cable alongside other accessories such as Allen wrench, mounting bracket, anchor nails, and Silicone cement. Make sure you have a masonry drill bit, and a hammer at hand, alongside a wire cutter. Puncture the silicone tube after removing the cap, and spread the Silicone bead gently at the top of the Chimney flue.

Stick the damper on the Chimney flue
Gently lower the cable wire into the chimney, and ensure that the wire does not get entangled while being lowered into the chimney flue. Let the damper stick perfectly on top of the flue, and make sure the Damper is centrally placed and it covers the entire surface of the flue and fill up any available spaces with silicone.

Properly set the mounting bracket on the firebox
The Mounting bracket must be located by measuring some 20 inches from the floor of the firebox. Simply mark these boxes with two holes, and get your drill, with the 1/4inch drill bit and drill two holes on the wall of the firebox where the anchor nails will be installed.

Drive-in the anchor nails for the mounting Bracket
Make the anchor nails and drive them through the mounting bracket in the holes you already made on the firebox. Use the hammer to drive in the nails.

Finally set the adjustment chimney damper
The chain handle must be threaded through the mounting bracket, and find the adjustment clamp. Use the Allen wrench gently loosen the adjustment clamp. The slack of the cable must pull through the adjustment clamp; likewise, you must pull the cable until the Chimney damper is closed. Make sure you tighten the clamp until it is firm.
