Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Unsafe Levels of Chimney Creosote Explained
Creosote buildup in the chimney flue should not be taken lightly. Creosote is highly flammable and may easily be ignited by hot flames rising in the chimney flue. Creosote buildup is thus a hazard; it is also reported to be the cause of most chimney fires.

Creosote forms in three stages and in each stage the level of risk increases. In the first stage creosote that forms is easy to brush away and home owners are encouraged to take advantage at this stage. The second stage contains tar thus is hardened and hard to clear away. Third stage creosote should be avoided; it is hard to clean and resembles dripping tar.

Each of the three stages of creosote may catch fire; the third stage creosote is the most hazards. When ignited it is likely to easily spread the fire as it burns for long periods. If the fire in the chimney gets into contact with combustible material around the flue it may cause a big fire.

Problem with having any openings in system is liquid creosote will and goes through joints or cracks as well as accumulates outside of flue tile. It is the serious problem as in the chimney fire the creosote ignites and becomes slow burning creosote fire that is not contained inside liner. The house fire gets greater possibility. It's probably good to consider unsafe chimney that had third degree of creosote, particularly if there is the chimney fire. Even though servicemen remove a lot of creosote possible, cleaning doesn't yield much of safety you would hope in for. Thus, it is probably good to remove old tiles totally (and getting rid of the creosote on outside of tiles also) and replace liner with the new insulated steel liner. Here is why. Reasons there're the bad mortar joints and cracks in the chimneys are many, which includes:
  • Wrong mortar often is used, and dries quickly & falls out after the construction.
  • Masons "work very fast" and do not think it is important to seal joints.
  • The flue tiles contained the chimney fire always crack. They will protect your home from the fire, however tiles themselves generally break & mortar is demolished. It is expected; it is exception if it does not happen.
  • Earth is shifting and stack of the tiles moves with time. This will open the mortar joints & sometimes crack the tiles.
  • Doesn't matter how much good its original job might have been, and nobody will protect against it. In such situation, you will have to rebuild for continued and safe use of the system. Other reason depends on type of the metal that is used for the chimney flashing.
