Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Removing Chimney Creosote and Soot
It is highly recommended that each chimney undergoes inspections and cleaning every year in order to make sure that it is still in a perfect condition, and that it is still safe to fulfill its purpose. If the chimney is left without being regularly cleaned, then soot and creosote can start building up, and that is one of the major reasons that cause chimney fires. Moreover, leaving the chimney in an unclean state will lead to damage and cause cracks and holes; this will decrease extraction capabilities and this way hazardous gas will be allowed to enter the house.

Removing ordinary chimney soot is a simple process. However, if there is a heavy creosote buildup, or if it seems that cleaning the chimney is a hard or risky job, then maybe it would be better to have a professional do the job.

Inspecting the Chimney
The most important area to clean is the smoke chamber, or as it can also be called, the smoke shelf area. Most chimney fires start there, so if this area is reachable, you can continue with the inspection instead of hiring a pro.

For a safe inspection, you should be wearing goggles and a respirator, and then follow these steps:
  • Clean out the ashes from the firebox.
  • Remove the grate.
  • Before opening the damper, you should open a window or a door for an equalization of the pressures.
  • Shine a flashlight into the firebox, and with the fireplace poker, scratch the surface of the smoke chamber. If there is a deep buildup, you should call a professional.
Getting the Right Tools
In order to get the right brush, you will have to measure the size of the chimney's flue liner. In addition, you will need brushes for the smoke chamber area as well as the firebox. If the flue liner is made of clay, you should have a metal bristle brush; if it is metal, then the brush should have plastic bristles. You should also have enough rods for the height of the entire chimney. To clean the smoke shelf, you will need a noodle brush which is bendable. For the sides of the firebox, you will have to buy a long-handled brush.

Cleaning the Chimney
Before starting the cleaning process, you should take measures to minimize the mess inside the house by:
  • Using a canvas tarp over the hearth and into the room.
  • Taping poly sheeting over the fireplace.
  • Inserting a vacuum hose.
  • Sealing everything with a duct tape.
  • Starting the vacuum and cleaning at the top.
  • Adding rods and moving down the chimney until the end.
  • Using the long-handled brush for the smoke chamber.
  • Removing the soot from the smoke shelf with the noodle brush.
  • Cleaning the sides of the firebox with the long-handled brush.
  • Vacuuming the firebox, and then folding the sheets to move them to the outside.
These are the steps to removing the creosote and soot. However, some cases need the help of a professional.
