Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Why is Dryer Lint Highly Flammable
Lint is a name commonly used for visible accumulations of textile fibers and similar materials found on and around clothing. The fine threads and fibers including cotton, linen and wool of the clothes comes out due to normal wear and tear over time and causes them to get deposited in various parts of a clothes dryer, pockets of our pant and shirt etc. That is the reason why our clothes become thin over a period of time.

The lints that form a sediment in the dryers are a part of this linen and fabric only. Though apparently it may look like some dust, but the fabric and the linen of the clothes gets clustered to form a pile of dust. Since linen , fabric or wool are highly inflammable, the lint in the dryer is highly flammable and often results in fire due to overheating of the dryer.

Dryer fires are liable for significant number of the damages, injuries or deaths each year. There're about 15,600 structure of fires, over 400 injuries as well as 15 deaths reported yearly because of dryer fires. As per US Fire Administration, each year dryer fires account on $100 million in the losses. Dryer fires involving the commercial dryers have 78% of higher injury rate than the residential dryer fires.

Dryer Fires and Lint Traps

Most of the dryer fires happen because of flammable lint caught in dryer's vent as well as becoming heated at a point of ignition. Many dryers come with the lint traps and filters made to capture lint. Improper dryer vent cleanup that restrict the airflow as well as lead to lint build up, two preventable causes of the clothes dryer fires.

Here are some common dryer vent mistakes:

Dryer vents are very long and have a lot of bends, but do not use dryer duct booster, and resulting in the lint buildup. While it comes about dryer vents, straighter and shorter is better.

The metal vents resist crushing much better than the plastic and foil that allows air & lint to get carried out of system. Decreased air flow from buildup and crushing will cause overheating & wear out clothes or appliance faster.

Dryer Fires

The filters fail to capture the lint, still assumption stays that emptying filter often is sufficient to protect the dryer. The assumption accounts on half of dryer fires, as they start from in lint traps.

Right Lint Trap Cleaning and Maintenance

Following maintenance and cleaning suggestions can help to prevent the dryer fires.

1. After cleaning lint filter, check very closely for rips and tears. Replace any damaged lint traps right away.
2. Clean & empty lint from exhaust pipe and rear of dryer after each use.
3. Do not put any kind of synthetic substances like foams, plastics, rubber and any cloth that might have been used for cleaning potentially flammable combustible liquids in dryer, even though they are washed thoroughly.
