Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Combustible Clearance for Fireplaces and Chimneys

There are certain rules and regulations that have been laid down in the context of combustible clearance for fireplaces and chimneys. A chimney located in the interior of any building or within the exterior wall will have a limited allowance to airspace and clearance to combustibles. Chimneys that are located outside the exterior wall of the buildings including those chimneys passing through building cornices shall have to abide by minimum airspace clearance. Those masonry chimneys that have a chimney lining system are specifically labeled for those chimneys that are in contact with combustibles and installed with manufacturer's installation instructions. In the case of a fireplace all wooden beams, joists, and other combustible materials shall have to have a clearance distance of not less than about 5.1 centimeters from the front faces and sides of the fireplaces.

The back of the fireplace needs a clearance of not less than 1.02 centimeters. This airspace will not be filled up other than providing fire blocking. Any part of chimney located in interior of your building or in exterior wall of building will have the minimum air clearance to the combustibles of 2inches (or 51 mm). The chimneys located outside of exterior walls of building, which includes chimneys that will pass through soffit and cornice, will have minimum of air space clearance about 1inch (or 25.4 mm). Air space won't be filled, other than to give fire blocking with the Section R1001.16. The common problem is there isn't enough of space between the unprotected walls or furnishings or other combustible components and wood burning stove and stovepipe.

Exceptions:

The masonry chimneys well equipped with chimney lining system labeled and listed for use in the chimneys in touch with the combustibles with UL1777 or installed with manufacturers' installation are allowed to have the combustible material with the exterior surfaces.

When chimneys are made as a part of concrete or masonry walls, the combustible materials will not touch masonry and concrete wall below 12 inches (or 306 mm) from inside surface of nearest flue lining. Use of flammable, foil duct extenders or flimsy plastic is prohibited. Just metal vents must get used; that is what many manufacturers specify.

The exposed combustible trim & edges of the sheathing materials, like flooring and wood siding, will be allowed about masonry chimney side walls, provided combustible trim and sheathing is minimum of 12 inches (or 306 mm) from inside surface of nearest flue lining. The combustible material and trim will not overlap the corners of the chimney by over 1 inch (or 25.4mm). The current code on the clearance of combustible materials from the fireplaces is unbuildable paragraph with 4 exceptions. It's noteworthy that clearance at a back of firebox was increased by 2" - 4" based on the evidence that "hot spot" is behind fireplace. Again, if fire place is proprietary & listed, some maker has taken the responsibility for this and code allows exception sanctioned by manufacturer of the listed system.
