Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

National Fire Protection Association Proper Code for House Fire Alarms
It is important to properly install smoke alarms and to keep them in working order, because this is the first step toward protecting your family and home from fire.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends that each local community prepares a program for smoke alarm installation. This program is an all-encompassing model from the very start, over instructions and tips for choosing volunteers, toward how to make community program public and how to ensure its conduction.

It is of crucial importance that your home is smoke alarm protected. Certain research has proven that modern furniture is made of very flammable materials and this can cause fast spreading of fire. Thus, well-positioned fire alarms can save your home and give you and your family members enough time to escape from a home on fire, if such a situation happens. During a previous period, it was recommended that there should be a smoke alarm in every bedroom, along with those located just in front of bedrooms (in hallways) and on every floor. Because older homes usually don't meet these requirements, it is necessary to adapt your home to this minimum to ensure fire protection.

How to Install Fire Alarms
  • Get fire alarms that have been verified by a recognized verifying laboratory
  • Put fire alarms in every bedroom, in front of it, and on every floor– including the basement
  • On floors without bedrooms, install fire alarms in the common room (or living room) or close to the stairway to an upper floor, or in both spots
  • In regard to fire alarms located on the bottom floor, i.e. in the basement, it would be best to put them on the ceiling, near the stairways leading to the upper floor
  • Fire alarms in a kitchen (or nearby area) should be located a minimum 10 feet (3 meters) from a stove in order to avoid false alarms during cooking
  • Place fire alarms on the ceiling or very high on the wall because, of course, smoke goes up. If you are going to place a fire alarm on the wall, it should be placed within inches of the ceiling
  • If you have pitched ceilings, locate the fire alarm within 3 feet of the tip, but not within the mere apex of the tip (at least 4 inches down the peak).
Replacing Your Fire Alarms
It is necessary to get new file alarms when the old ones reach 10 years. In order to be know when this happens, check in the back of the alarm and there you will find the date when the alarm was been made. Besides the importance of replacing fire alarms that are 10 years old, it is also very important to replace (right away) a fire alarm that doesn't respond correctly when you test it. You should also replace the chemical within the fire alarm (mixture of carbon monoxide-smoke) in accordance to manufacturer's instructions.

In order to follow all the important actions to ensure the fire alarm's proper function, it is a good idea to place a calendar with the necessary activities to perform in a visible place in home so that you never forget to do what you have to do.

Make sure to test all of your fire alarms every month. When you test them all, note it on the calendar so that you keep an accurate record.
