Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Installing a Cast-in-place Chimney Liner
A cast-in-place chimney liner is a lining option that provides the best safety, durability and thermal efficiency. Cast-in-place liners are placed by pouring material similar to concrete (but actually made of volcanic rock) inside the chimney, all the way down the flue lining. When this material dries and sets, it will create a smooth, durable, resistant and incredibly well-insulated liner. This is because the material contains numerous tiny pockets of air, making it very light, and at the same time, incredibly effective insulator. It is a very effective and often used tactic because this lining can be put in when you are just installing chimney, or into an old chimney to improve its quality and efficiency. A cast-in-place lining is appropriate for all applications: industrial, commercial or residential, as well as for all types of installations: furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, corn stoves, boilers or incinerators. It is also appropriate for any type of fuel: gas, heating oil, coal, wood, or pellets.

A cast-in-place liner is a great choice to install in a damaged chimney that is in need of a support in structure. Cast-in-place liners give an incredible insulation quality to the flue, minimizing the possibility of creosote buildup and taking gases up. Research has proven that cast-in-place liners hold off higher temperatures better than stainless steel liners or tile liners.

What is Not Good About Cast-in-place Liner?
Well, there are two things: for one, it is more expensive than any other chimney liner, and it is very difficult to place it properly. Once it sets onto the lining, it can be very challenging to remove it if you choose to do so.

What is Good About Cast-in-place Lining?
  • It doesn't give any consent to combusting elements (i.e. sheet rock, wood, insulation)
  • It can withstand temperatures of up to 2100 degrees!
  • It provides excellent lining insulation and thus minimizes condensation or creosote development within the flue
  • It can't be affected by corrosion that develops from oil or gas fired furnaces
  • You can use it in chimneys with several offsets
  • It will generally improve a chimney's structural integrity because it will seal all the cracks and holes within joints and loose bricks
  • It smoothly connects to the smoke chambers of a chimney
  • This lining is very solid and smooth-there are no connections or gaps within
When you invest in a cast–in-place lining, you will get a single-piece, extremely well insulated liner that will not have seams or cracks in it that could expand later on and diminish the structural integrity of an entire chimney-this simply doesn't happen in this case. The mixture is so smooth and penetrable that it gets into all the cracks, voids and loose bricks, connecting them neatly and permanently. With a cast–in-lining, a chimney's integrity will be repaired and strengthened beyond any other masonry repair and reconstruction. For older chimneys, a cast–in-lining will stop flue deterioration that started within. Thanks to its insulation quality, the chimney will develop significantly less smoke or water condensation and creosote buildup will be very minimal.
