How chimney shield water repellent works
With the chimney shield water repellent, you will make your bricks and chimney to last for a long period. You can use only one application and it is going to make a barrier so the water will not penetrate inside. It means that the bricks will be protected against thaw and freeze damage, deterioration and spalling. The material is not flammable and it works on the exterior and vertical masonry surface.

It is important for you to understand the difference that exists between a water repellant material and a sealer. The sealer is going to make a film at the surface and it traps the moisture inside. However, the water repellant works in the opposite way. It is breathable and the surface also can breathe and this keeps the water away.

While treating the chimney, it is not recommended to use the sealer since the chimney can easily heat up and cool down after sometime and this creates the moisture inside. Such moisture has to escape through the mortal joints and bricks. In case the sealer is used, such moisture is going to remain trapped inside. When the freezing time come, the freezing moisture is going to freeze and it will thaw when it warms up. If the water freezes, then it is going to expand. This is going to cause the faces of the bricks of poping off and this is known as spalling. When this takes place, there will be a need to do some major replacement since the bricks cannot be repaired. When there are many bricks that have spalled , the chimney and the bricks will have to be replaced. When you use water repellant, you are not going to suffer any of these problems.

You have to apply the water repellant by the use of a garden sprayer that have a fan type nozzle. You should start at the bottom of the chimney going up to the top. If you apply the flood coat on the surface, it will be saturated and it will be easy to apply the water repellent on it so that it can soak very well. You should also have a brush handy in order to ensure even distribution and to beak the surface tension in order to allow the water repellant to be absorbed. When the absorption is deeper, the waterproofing will last for a long period. To achieve the optimum results, apply the second coat. The water repellent can take 6 hours to dry.

After waterproofing your chimney, you have to clean up. You have to be careful about the drop clothes you use or the suppliers that you have taken to the roof top. It is always good to do this job when you have helper whom you can hand the things to. You should clean the sprayer by the user of the brush with water and soap. If the chimney has creosote stains, rust, dirty, dust or mold, you have to clean it first before you use water repellant. You can use a power washer if you are not willing to scrub.
