Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Extend a chimney flue
Extending a chimney flue may become necessary for several reasons, and one of such reasons is when there is a tendency for smoke to build up in your home-extending the chimney flue in this situation will help create a better draft for the short chimney. The extension is done to get the Chimney flue to the proper height above the rooftop. The Chimney flue size must not be too small for the fireplace opening; otherwise smoke will drift into the room when the fire place is on.

Extending a Chimney flue with few steps
There are few steps you can take in extending your fireplace Chimney flue:
  • Remove the old crown from the Chimney
  • Get the flue liner extension and attach it
  • Build the brick surrounding the newly attached crown
  • Allow the mortal to settle around the extended chimney flue liner
Remove the Old crown from the Chimney
With the aid of a Chisel and hammer, gently remove the old crown which is the chimney's headpiece. The headpiece is usually made up of stainless steel or mortal, however you must remove the crown without damaging the flue liner.

Get the flue liner extension and attach it
Once you remove the old crown, a portion of the old liner will be exposed. Gently clean the exposed part with a wire brush, and with your new flue having the same length as the old one, simply load the extension flue with a fireplace mortal and at the top of the new flue, simply place some adhesives and gently place the new liner on top of the old one.

Gently build a brick around the new Flue liner
Once the new flue has been put in place, you need to build all the sides of the new liner with some brick and mortar. You need to build the walls around the new liner and ensure that there is a space of 12 inches between the new flue extension and the new bricks.

Construct a frame for the newly installed crown
With the aid of a 2x6 lumber, you need to make some square frames around the newly built brick of the chimney, and make sure the brick fit snugly to the walls edges. Mix and pour additional mortar inside the frame and fill the space between the frame and the new liner up until it begins to harden (try as much as possible to shape the mortar in an upward position around the flue liner until you have about 4 inches of exposed Flue liner at the edge.

Allow the mortar to settle around the newly made flue extension
Make sure the mortar is moistened and the entire region must be covered with plastic sheet. The frame must not be removed until you allow the whole design to remain damp for a couple of days and when the mortar must have hardened very well. You can remove the frame once the mortar has been hardened. Once the extension has been completed, the crown may be replaced.
